Sales Tax Formula

To calculate the sales tax amount on an item, you multiply the original price by the sales tax rate (divided by 100 to convert it from a percentage to a decimal).

Tax Amount = Original Price × (Tax Rate ÷ 100)

To find the final checkout price, you simply add that calculated tax amount to the original price.

Total Price = Original Price + Tax Amount

Example

If you are buying a $50.00 item with a 6% sales tax:

Tax = 50 × (6 ÷ 100) = 50 × 0.06 = $3.00
Total = 50 + 3.00 = $53.00

Therefore, you will pay exactly $53.00 at the register.
