How California Sales Tax Works
California has a statewide base sales tax rate of 7.25%. However, total sales tax rates in California are a combination of the state rate and local district taxes.
Because cities and counties can add their own district taxes, the total sales tax rate you pay at the register can range from the base 7.25% up to 10.75% in some cities.

California Sales Tax Breakdown
The 7.25% statewide base tax rate is actually comprised of several different funds:
- 3.9375%: State General Fund
- 1.0625%: Local Revenue Fund (Realignment)
- 0.50%: Local Public Safety Fund
- 0.50%: Education Protection Account
- 1.25%: Local County/City tax (Uniform across the state)
On top of this 7.25%, local jurisdictions (cities and counties) can vote to add "District Taxes" to fund local services like transportation, libraries, or emergency services. This is why buying a car in Los Angeles (9.5%) is more expensive in taxes than buying one in Anaheim (7.75%).
