Percentage Formula

The word "percent" literally means "per one hundred." To find a percentage of a number, you divide the percentage by 100 (which turns it into a decimal), and then multiply it by the base number.

Result = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Base Number

Example

If you want to leave a 20% tip on a $45.00 restaurant bill:

Decimal = 20 ÷ 100 = 0.20
Tip Amount = 0.20 × 45 = $9.00

Therefore, the tip is $9.00. If you want the total bill, you simply add the $9.00 tip to the $45.00 base, making it $54.00 total.
