How California Income Tax Works

California has one of the most progressive state income tax systems in the country. Rates start at 1.00% for low-income earners and scale all the way up to 13.3% (or 14.4% if including the mental health services tax) for the highest earners.

In addition to standard state and federal taxes, California employees are also subject to CASDI (California State Disability Insurance), which is automatically deducted from every paycheck.

Using the Paycheck Calculator

  1. Enter Gross Pay: Type in your salary before any taxes or deductions are taken out.
  2. Select Frequency: Tell the calculator if the number you entered is your annual salary, a monthly paycheck, or an hourly wage.
  3. Review Deductions: The results will automatically estimate your federal taxes, FICA, CASDI, and California state taxes to give you your true net take-home pay.

Note: This tool provides estimations for a Single filer using standard deductions. Actual paychecks may vary based on pre-tax 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums.
