When precision is required, you can calculate the necessary seeds based on your target plant population. This method factors in germination, purity, and field emergence (establishment rate) to ensure you plant enough seeds to achieve the desired stand.
Example Calculation
If you want a target population of 30,000 corn plants per acre, and your seed has 95% germination, 98% purity, and you expect a 90% emergence rate in the field:
- Efficiency = 0.95 × 0.98 × 0.90 = 0.8379 (83.79%)
- Seeds Needed = 30,000 ÷ 0.8379
- Total = 35,804 seeds per acre
